Hammer toe develops as a result of toe deformity, consisting in its lifting up and flexion, which gives it a claw-like look. The deformity usually affects the second toe, but other toes may also be involved, which bend and closely adhere, and hard corns develop on their upper surface to protect the bone from chronic irritation by the footwear.
