Paweł Kołodziejski, PhD, MD and Krzysztof Bryłka, MD conducted an Internship in posterior foot and ankle surgery in Sint Maartenskliniek, Nijmegen (Holland) under the guidance of dr Jan-Willem K. Louwerens, the President of European Foot and Ankle Surgery (EFAS).
Dr Louwerens is one of the pioneers in foot surgery in Holland, who has almost twenty years of experience in this field in orthopaedics. He especially deals with complex deformities of the ankle, subtalar joint and the metatarsus. Despite solid theoretical basis and a long-term clinical experience he does not avoid using modern implants and the most advanced surgical techniques in his practice. During their internship doctors Bryłka and Kołodziejski had the opportunity to share experiences concerning contemporary surgical management of hallux valgus, hammer toe deformity and hallux rigidus. With dr Louwerens they participated in total ankle replacement surgery and correcting surgery of complex foot and ankle deformities. It turned out that in most cases dr Louwerens uses the same surgical techniques as Polish orthopaedists from the Foot Clinic.
